Humanity First Canada: A Beacon of Hope During the 2005 Pakistan Earthquake

On October 8, 2005, a devastating 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Pakistan-administered Kashmir region, the North-West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), and parts of India and Afghanistan. The earthquake caused widespread destruction, killing at least 79,000 people, injuring tens of thousands, and leaving 2.8 million people homeless.Entire communities were reduced to rubble, with over 32,000 buildings collapsing, including homes, schools, and hospitals. In the face of this overwhelming tragedy, Humanity First Canada rose to the occasion, providing critical relief and support to the affected populations.

The Immediate Need for Relief

The earthquake’s impact was catastrophic, particularly in the mountainous regions of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, where harsh weather conditions compounded the suffering of survivors. Families were left without shelter, food, or medical care, and the scale of the disaster overwhelmed local resources. Humanity First Canada quickly mobilized its teams to deliver life-saving aid to those in desperate need.

Humanity First Canada’s Response

Humanity First Canada’s response to the 2005 Pakistan earthquake was both swift and comprehensive. Their efforts focused on addressing immediate needs while also laying the groundwork for long-term recovery. Here’s how they made a difference:

  • Medical Relief for Over 75,000 Victims: Humanity First Canada deployed 18 doctors and 50+ non-medical volunteers who worked tirelessly for over 45 days. They provided medical care to more than 1,000 individuals daily, treating injuries, illnesses, and trauma caused by the earthquake. A neurosurgical unit was also established at Al-Abbas Hospital in Muzaffarabad to address critical medical needs.
  • Food and Essential Supplies: The organization served over 350,000 meals to displaced families and distributed 520 tons of relief supplies, including food, clothing, and hygiene kits. These efforts ensured that survivors had access to basic necessities during the most challenging days following the disaster.
  • Shelter and Housing: Humanity First Canada provided tents and temporary housing to over 39,000 people, offering them a safe place to stay amidst the destruction. A tent city was established for six months, housing more than 800 individuals and providing them with a sense of stability during a time of uncertainty.
  • Support for Children and Families: Recognizing the emotional toll of the disaster, Humanity First Canada organized educational and extracurricular activities for displaced children, helping them cope with the trauma and regain a sense of normalcy. Additionally, mass wedding ceremonies were held for displaced populations, supporting families in rebuilding their lives.
  • Logistical Support: Humanity First Canada delivered 8 truckloads of relief supplies to shelters across the affected regions, ensuring that aid reached even the most remote areas.
